Volunteer of the month

During our move down to San Jose in the early summer I decided to call time time on my volunteer work.  I'd really enjoyed doing it and it had given me a much needed purpose for a while.  However, San Jose up to Mountain View/Sunnyvale was just too far a commute when I wasn't being paid for it.  As a final farewell though, they made me their volunteer of the month - thanks First Five!

Bloody hell, it is ever going to cool down?!

16th August 2012

So school is underway and the temperature is still 35c. Why does school start so early over here. It seems crazy when we’ve still got possibly months of this to come. I’m trying hard not to moan but putting the kids into a car that is too hot to sit down in after school every day is making us all hot and bothered!

School – FINALLY!

Phia on her first day of Kindergarten. I felt sooo weird. I’d waited a long time for this moment and she was really excited but it felt really strange. The school felt huge and alien and I didn’t really like. She did though, and that was all that mattered at this point.

Down the long and winding coast

August 11th 2012

It was time for our last visitors before the school year started. Dad, Andrea and Ewan came visit. We decided to do our favoured down the coast trip with them. First stop was Santa Cruz where Ste and Ewan made themselves feel pretty sick by going on every rollercoaster/nasty looking ride available. They had a ball. I managed to get dad on the log flume and we got pretty wet. It was a baking hot day though so we soon drier off. Phia persuaded Ewan to go on the uppy/downy ride with ride (it takes you high into the air and then drops you down quickly). The look on his face was priceless. We then headed down into Monterey for something to eat. The next day was further down the coast and into Big Sur. Stunning as usual and we had a fabulous day on Pheiffer beach in the glorious sunshine. Unfortunately the traffic was horrendous on the way home and it took us hours. However overall it was a brilliant trip.

Girls on Film

August 8th 2012

Leaving the boys at home to put the kids to bed Lorraine and I heading up to the Mountain Winery in Saratoga to watch Duran Duran play in the cozy little outdoor theatre. It was amazing! The winery is way up in the hills with a fantastic view of the Bay area. It was a beautiful evening and we picnicked on cheese and crackers and wine that once again was forbidden. Being the good girls we are we hid ours in the kids Lightning McQueen cups whilst others were much more brazen.
Inside the venue itself the $15 a glass of Mountain Winery wine went down very easily and the concert was amazing. Lorriane and I seemed to be the only members of the audience who knew all the words and I got in trouble for waving my hand in front of someones face who was trying to watch the show (it called having fun you conservative Americans!). The drunker we got the louder we sang. The played all the best stuff, my fave being Come Undone. Shay was our taxi for the evening (which was fortunate as theres no way we’d have made it home on our own!) as the 4 kids happily slept the night away at our house.
Sore heads aplenty the next day but we both agreed it was worth it and a trip to the Winery for next years summer concerts is already in the planning

A new house – AGAIN!!

July 2012

So, after a year of living in our very small and pretty run down house in Mountain View we had decided that because we’d got Sophia into the school of our choice and the whole hassle of moving again would be a nightmare, that we would slum it in where we were for another year. That was until Yousri decided to put us on a month to month contract. Yousri, our landlord, lived over the road from us. Although I don’t think I’ve mentioned him in this blog he’d been a total thorn in our sides for the year. Always poking around uninvited in the garden and fixing things in the worse bodge jobs possible. He then decided to out the rent up by $200 and refused to even consider making the inside of the house a bit nicer. After we realised we were on month to month we decided to forget what we had agreed on earlier and get out of Mountain View and go down to San Jose. This has the obvious benefit of being closer to the Greenes and also being able to afford a much nicer house for a lot less rent. We managed to bag a lovely house on the 4th July (when everyone else was living up at street parties) and as we were the first ones to view it in the morning the lady promised it was ours. We breathed a sigh of relief as with loads of people after every house I was starting to feel like it wasn’t going to happen for us. The neighbourhood school on paper seemed ‘ok’ and so we enrolled Phia although this didn’t sit that easily with me after having done so much research in Mountain View. Still, as we’ve learnt living here, sometimes you just have to take a chance of things working out! The house is fabulous and lovely. Still on one floor, its roomy and spacious, has a big room for the kids and a separate one for us, a large garage and lovely ensuite bathroom (yay for 2 toilets!). It also has a lovely garden, just the right size and not big and unmanageable like the last one).
The first week in was a stressful one as everything seemed to be broken, the boiler, the dishwasher, the freezer, the blinds etc! Still the management company got it all fixed quickly (we thanked as lucky starts we were not renting of someone like Yousri) and since then its been plain sailing. We love it here.

Its breezy by the bay - Happy Independence Day!

4 July 2012

The street parties, celebrations and fireworks meant even less this year than last (if that were possible?!)  So, after checking out a new possible home (see next post) we headed up to Sausalito (just over the Golden Gate bridge).  Its a lovely little place with lots of shops it would be nice to explore without the kids!  Still a lovely, if somewhat breezy, day.
